Nike files counterfeiting suit against Chinese firms

Nike, the iconic American sporting and apparel brand retailer is suing two Chinese companies for using its logo illegally. The logo under contention is a silhouette of its brand ambassador and basketball star, Michael Jordan.

The two companies, Shanghai Century Lianhua Chengshan Supermarket Co Ltd and Kangchen Garment Co Ltd, have been sued for illegally selling garments displaying the fake log and manufacturing the garments carrying the logo, respectively.

Nike is claiming a compensation of US $43,900 for the act as well as wants them to give notices in local newspapers to dispel the negative influence they have created in the minds of the consumers.

Courts in Shanghai are brimming with copyright and patent cases and they are increasing with each passing year, mostly filed by brands from EU and US. In 2008, 1,757 cases were filed of which, resolution could be brought in 1,634 cases.
